Student Engagement

Leadership, Service, and Extracurricular Activities

MCPS students can engage and access several different experiences through leadership, service and extracurricular activities. Students are encouraged to participate at the school level and visit this website for additional learning experiences and information, which are often student led. New content and information will be updated throughout the course of the school year.

Engagement Leads to Success

Successful student participation in leadership, service, and extracurricular activities positively engage students in their schools and the greater community. This engagement leads to greater attendance to school and performance and achievement in the classroom.

Mission

The Student Leadership & Extracurricular Activities Unit aims to provide equitable access to a diverse range of student experiences (leadership, service, and extracurricular programs) in which students develop core competencies, make connections with peers and mentors, and have fun. We seek to support schools in creating a welcoming environment where all students are encouraged to broaden their engagement and prepare them for college, career, and community.

Student Service Learning

Students are encouraged to continue earning student service learning hours towards their graduation requirement, even during distance learning. The MCPS SSL program has made some significant changes to allow students to earn SSL hours virtually if they:

  • Are serving a community need through a non-profit organization
  • Monitored by a supervisor of the non-profit agency or MCPS staff member
  • Sponsored by an MCPS teacher or staff member

Summer 2024 has been busy! The 47th Student Member of the Board, Mr. Praneel Suvarna, was sworn in on July 1, 2024. Our unit hosted two Summer RISE students who designed student service learning materials and redesigned the student-to-student extracurricular activities. Over 30 student volunteers spent a week sorting 252 boxes of donations and repurposed 4,539.6 pounds of school supplies saving them from our landfills. Today we connected those school supplies to 1,465 students from across MCPS to help them be best prepared for the start of the school year.
